International Students
Burwood School is a state primary school providing education for 5 to 11 year olds. Normally each school year starts with a roll of about 400 students and finishes with a roll of about 470. This growth arises from an annual intake of about 70 five year olds.
The school has a stable staff consisting of 18 full-time teachers, 5 part-time teachers, 3 office/library staff, 5 teacher-aides, and 4 caretaking and cleaning staff.
The school is located in the suburb of Burwood in eastern Christchurch. Burwood is a pleasant, established suburb of Christchurch.
The students of the school generally come from stable homes. Their parents value education and are very supportive of the school. This is reflected in the attitudes and attainments of the children.

Enrolling an International Student
International Students in this age group must live with at least one of their parents, in New Zealand, for the period of their enrolment. The only exception to this is where they live with a guardian who has been appointed by a court of law in either New Zealand or their home country.
To enrol at Burwood School you must approach the Principal with a request for enrolment.
A request for enrolment can be made by e-mailing the Principal
principal@burwood.school.nz
or by e-mailing the school office
office@burwood.school.nz
or by visiting the school.
If a place is available at your child’s age and class level the Principal will explain the enrolment procedure, as outlined below. You may then be offered that place.
Enrolment Procedures
Before an International Student can be enrolled in a New Zealand School, they must have a Student Visa or Permit. It is an offence for International Students to be enrolled in a New Zealand without such documents. Therefore the enrolment process is as follows.
- You will need to take the Student's Passport, plus payment of at least 10 weeks International Student Fees ($2000.00) to the school
- The school will issue a receipt for these fees, plus an "Offer of Place for Foreign Student" form and an "Information Package".
- The school will also photocopy pertinent pages from the student's passport and will retain this photocopy.
- You will be asked to sign a simple acknowledgement that you have received this information.
- You will have to take the "Offer of Place for Foreign Student" form, and the receipt, to the New Zealand Immigration Service.
- The details completed in the ‘Offer of Place to Foreign Student’ form are required by the New Zealand Immigration Service for the issuing of a Student Visa or Permit. You may like to visit the New Zealand Immigration Service website for more information about the Student Visa or Permit at www.immigration.govt.nz
- Return to the school with this Visa or Permit, and also the following:
- Enrolment Form from the Information Package.
- Emergency Contact Form from the Information Package.
- Evidence of Health Insurance.
- Evidence of Travel Insurance.
- Internet Users Agreement (for children enrolled at Year 3 and above only).
The school will photocopy and then return to you the Student Visa or Permit and the Evidence of Health Insurance and Travel Insurance, and will retain the other forms.
- The child can then start school. School Uniform and Stationery will be issued as soon as possible.
Please note that proficiency in English is not a pre-requisite for enrolment at Burwood School. We will assess your child's English during the first two weeks of enrolment and we will then provide small group instruction in English for approximately 30 minutes per day, on four days of the week.
Assessment in other curriculum areas will also be completed during the first two weeks of enrolment. As a result of these assessments it is always possible that the initial class placement could be changed.
Enrolment is conditional upon all conditions and requirements being met and all information given being correct. If it is subsequently discovered at any time that any wrong information has been provided enrolment may be terminated.
